Thomas Connolly’s
Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:15Thomas Connolly's pub was first licensed in 1861. There's a great account of Connolly's in the book The Irish Pub, by James Fennell and Turtle Bunbury. Connolly's storied past includes at least one visit from Charles Stewart Parnell during the pub's early days, plus Thomas Connolly himself becoming Mayor of Sligo in 1890 (the same year he acquired the premises).
The pub was established during a time of plentiful maritime trade; deliveries of rope, linen and tea came into Sligo on ships from all over Europe. There was once a grocer’s shop at one end of the pub – now gone – popular for making sugar, selling tea and bottling whiskey.

Henry Lyon's Shop
Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:07- Henry Lyons has been working with and for the Sligo community for over 180 years. Henry Lyons Department Store was established in 1835 on Lower Knox Street.
- Henry Lyons has always been an innovator and keen to increase sales as part of that they produced a seasonal brochure which contained all items that were for sale in the shop. They also ran a wholesale business and served from Belmullet to Tory Island.
- When the First World War broke many of the staff went to fight about 25% in total. They were replaced mostly by women at that time. Their names are all recorded on Henry Lyons Roll of Honour.
- During the war of Independence (mid 1920's) Cecil Lyons sent a boy to Dublin every day to collect a national newspaper which was pinned to the front window of the shop for everyone to read as newspapers were not readily available at that time. The Black and Tans broke the shop window, the only result was that the paper reappeared and Cecil Lyons started to make uniforms for the Citizen Army.

Hargadon's Pub
Tuesday, 28 November 2017 16:02
- Walking off Sligo main shopping street into Hargadons is like taking a step back in time, as its delightful and charismatic interior is almost the same as when it first opened.
- The present building situated at 4 & 5 O’Connell Street, Sligo was built in 1864 by Bernard Collery, a local merchant, who was also a member of Sligo Town Council and a Member of Parliament representing Sligo.
- The businesses carried on included general grocery and the retail and wholesale of beer, wine and spirits based in the cellars and bonded warehouse at the rear of the building.
- After Mr. Collery’s death in 1909 the property was acquired by Messrs Patrick & Thomas Hargadon who gave the property its name. Acquired in 2006 by R. & E. Monahan as part of the development of the adjoining Johnston Court Shopping Mall, Hargadons has since been sensitively restored to its former glory while keeping its original architecture, fixtures and fittings, its ambience and eclectic atmosphere.

Dolly's Cottage
Tuesday, 28 November 2017 15:58
- Dolly's Cottage is a stone built cottage with two rooms and a loft with original walls, roof, roof beams, fireplace and pouch bed.
- When you step through the little red door it's like stepping into the past. Dolly's Cottage has hardly changed in its two hundred years and provides an experience of how people lived until the not so distant past.
- The cottage is named after Dolly Higgins, the last person to live here. She was a genial soul, well loved by young and old in the district.
- When Dolly died in 1970, the cottage was purchased by the Strandhill guild of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, with a view to preserving it for future generations.
